UGUIDE 2026 Food Plot System - Pheasant Hunting

In 2025, the Pheasant Camp Lodge (PCL), enjoyed a record harvest of organically (wild) reared roosters to the tune of 502 for the season. This success is of course due in part to the 8 groups that hunted at our camp this last year. Great dogs skills and strategy along with shooting skills are required to be successful but the habitat comes first.
Beginning in 2002 the cover at PCL began to get implemented in the forms of warm/cool season grass, woody cover and food plots. Most all this cover on the 700 acres is fully established and complete with final tweaks being made to the food plot system. Of course maintenance to the existing cover is the next frontier but the food plot system is planted annually and we are close to a final design that should last going forward.
To simplify this for you the system is a rotation of Double Team Grain Sorghum and a variety of tall roundup ready corn and dwarf corn mixture. The Dwarf Corn is sourced from Hancock Seed and the RR Tall corn is sourced from my local Pheasant's Forever Chapter. I have a 10' wide John Deere 1590 Grain Drill and I block every other row (15" rows planted) and fill half the drill with tall corn and the other side/half with short corn and go back and forth in planted resulting in 10' widths of tall/short corn. This provides ample cover and feed for the birds as well as walking lanes for hunters and cover they can see over and shoot from which is usually not the case when trying to hunt corn food plots.
I did try these two varieties of corn but did not plant in the scheme I mention above. It did result in some good hunting though and I am confident this will make these corn plots hunt like the milo plots do now. I also like the benefits of an ear of corn lower to ground and more accessible to pheasants.
