South Dakota Pheasant Season 2026: Dates & Opener

The 2026 traditional season opens Saturday 17 October 2026 and runs through 31 January 2027.

Two shorter seasons run before it. Below are the official dates, shooting hours, limits and licence details, followed by our own view — after two decades of hosting hunts — on which part of the season actually hunts best.

Shooting hours and limits

  • Shooting hours: noon to sunset during the first week of the traditional season, then 10:00am to sunset for the remainder.
  • Daily limit: 3 rooster pheasants.
  • Possession limit: 15 roosters (5 days at the daily limit; a 3-day hunt works out at 9).
  • Roosters only — hens are protected.

Non-resident licences

Most of our hunters travel in from out of state. A non-resident small game licence runs from $10 for youth up to $142 for adults, plus a $25 Habitat Stamp. It covers two five-day hunting periods and can be bought online before you travel — you do not need to arrange it through an outfitter.

Full licence details and online purchase are on the GFP licensing site. More detail on our licence information page.

Which part of the season hunts best?

Opening weekend gets the attention, but it is not automatically the best hunting. Our rates fall as the season progresses because demand drops — not because the birds do.

Late season, from Thanksgiving onward, has real advantages: the harvest is finished across the state so birds concentrate into the remaining cover, temperatures suit the dogs far better, roosters are fully coloured and easy to identify, and there is much less standing cover to work through. The trade-off is weather — you are hunting South Dakota in December, and that carries risk.

Early season suits groups who want milder weather and are bringing younger dogs. Both work. It depends on your group.
