SD GFP Road Counts are out...Down, Down, Down....Now what? It's been 2 months since our last report in July. Much has transpired since then. I had to finish mowing my new CRP blocks the first week in August and without a doubt that week I saw the most birds on the roads and in the CRP cover all summer. Even as a landowner out working habitat on your farm it remains difficult to assess real bird numbers due to all the cover available for young broods to escape into.

MN DNR Reports a 522,000 Rooster Harvest during 2008 Pheasant Hunting Season

For the fifth year out of the last six, Minnesota pheasant hunters in 2008 harvested more than a half million roosters. Prior to 2003, Minnesota hunters had bagged more than 500,000 birds during just two seasons since 1964 (1981 & 1991). While the 2008 harvest fell well below the 40-year record set in 2007 with a 655,000 bird harvest, hunter participation and success during the 2008 season remained high.

September 24, 2008  Pheasants Forever (PF) and Quail Forever (QF), members of the No Child Left Inside Coalition, applaud the U.S. House of Representatives for its recent passage of the No Child Left Inside Act of 2008. The No Child Left Inside Act of 2008 creates new funding for training teachers in outdoor education, expands environmental education programs and helps states to create programs to ensure that U.S. graduates are environmentally literate.

South Dakota Decides Against Longer Pheasant Season

Heeding the concerns of landowners and sportsmen’s groups, the S.D. Game, Fish and Parks Commission decided against a proposal that would have lengthened the South Dakota pheasant hunting season to the end of January.
