Things are looking up in South and North Dakota in terms of the fall pheasant hunting outlook. Here is some information in regards to what I am seeing and hearing that is dramatically different (better) than last year):
- The spring precipitation levels are at or above the monthly averages for all areas of the prime pheasant range (Mitchell, Presho, Timber Lake and Aberdeen)
- Pastures, CRP, and other fallow areas have incredible growth in terms of nesting grasses due to the precipitation. Both duck and pheasant nesting conditions are very favorable as reported by local Pheasants Forever and South Dakota Game Fish and Parks Biologists. In other terms, "The drought is over".
- Across the Dakota's and Minnesota, spotters are reporting larger nest sizes and broods of pheasant eggs and chicks.
- South Dakota Game Fish and Parks Biologists believe that the overall quality of pheasant nesting cover will offset any issues of nest flooding. These areas of concern were largely in the James River Valley area and NE corner of South Dakota and SE of North Dakota.
- At this time, it is anticipated that the overall pheasant populations in the Dakota's will be above populations found in the 2005 and 2006 years.
- The South Dakota Pheasant Opener is noon on Oct. 20th 2007. (Daily limit 3, Possession limit 15)
- South Dakota Pheasant hunting hours change to start at 10:00 on Oct 27th. (A week earlier than tradition.)
- The North Dakota Pheasant Hunting Opener is Oct. 13th at sunrise
- North Dakota Pheasant Hunting Hours are from 1/2 hour before sunrise to sunset (Daily limit 3, Possession limit 12)
